SURF ROAD is a café and casual dining spot nestled on Oceanbeach Road in Mount Maunganui, offering a laid-back atmosphere that reflects the coastal vibe of this New Zealand beach town. It’s the kind of place locals visit for a relaxed breakfast or brunch catch-up, especially on weekend mornings when families and friends gather to start their day without rush.

The café’s interior is marked by subtle, thoughtfully chosen decor that keeps the ambiance calm yet engaging, with plenty of seating including long communal tables that encourage a social feel. Despite its popularity, the space never feels cramped, making it welcoming to groups of all sizes and even pet owners, as the spot is known to be dog-friendly.

SURF ROAD’s menu includes all-day sides like fries with aioli and slaw, and a kids’ menu that features approachable, comforting choices such as mini eggs benedict with bacon, pancakes, and chicken with chips. These options highlight the café’s focus on uncomplicated, satisfying food that appeals to families and casual diners alike.

Coffee quality is a strong suit here, with locals appreciating expertly made flat whites, chai lattes, and specialty drinks like matcha and affogatos. The staff tend to be friendly and attentive, adding a welcoming human touch that complements the overall experience. It’s clear that for many, this café is more than just about the food or drink; it’s about spending a relaxed morning in a cozy, friendly environment.

One practical note: the café is not geared for long work or study sessions, as power outlets are limited, so it’s best suited for social gatherings rather than remote work. Parking is generally straightforward to find nearby, which adds to the convenience for a morning visit.

Overall, SURF ROAD fits well into the neighborhood rhythm as a casual, welcoming spot where locals and visitors can enjoy solid coffee, simple hearty breakfasts, and a friendly vibe that's distinctly Mount Maunganui.

Absolutely loved our first visit for a great breakfast! Great flat white, amazing breakie, the Scottish woman helping us was super kind and professional. We had a great morning with our kids (who also loved their French toast and chai lattes) at this cozy place. Thank you so much for making our first breakfast experience of our kiwi trip a great one!

Finally came from the Waikato to try out this popular cafe! Wasn't sure what to expect after reading a few bad reviews but we were impressed. Found a carpark easily, and sat at one of the nice long tables indoors. The whole cafe is so relaxing with subtle decor, all carefully chosen and just blends so well. Love the whole look, and the water station is really cool:) We ordered drinks, 2 beef wagyu burgers with fries, and a house made granola, with a gf muffin. The food arrived within 15 minutes, coffees were delivered promptly and the staff were super friendly and helpful when we asked a couple of food related questions. Our meals were divine, the burgers were super tasty, and the granola was actually house made ( so many cafes dump it out of a box) I couldn't really see anything to fault here, and will definitely be returning next time we are over at the beach.

Loved the"vibe" of this place. Really popular place. I went for lunch/brunch with my 2 siblings. Was served very quickly. Staff are very friendly and only to willing to make sure everything was good for all of us. We had nothing but a great positive interaction with both staff and public alike. Pet friendly as well. I understand everyone will have different opinions. Ours was a 10/10.

This is a really great café with a modern yet welcoming vibe, friendly staff, clean toilets, plenty of space, amazing food, and excellent coffee. However, the one downside — and the reason I probably wouldn’t return — is that there are only two power points in the entire café. I often choose cafés not just for the food and atmosphere, but also as a place to study or get some work done, and that’s hard to do without being able to plug in my laptop. If you added more power outlets, it would honestly be the perfect spot. I’d love to come back — just please consider calling an electrician!

I came here to understand why this place has such bad reviews, and I dont see why. I had 2 coffees and a custard tart with fruit on top. All amazing. The services was lovely, the coffee was lovely, the tart was amazing. Such a great location, plenty of seats, nice vibe. Would recommend

Food was superb ! Acai bowl much bigger than expected, while i went basic with scrambled eggs & side of salmon, they were the best scrambled eggs I've ever had! It was a weekday and while near full, meals & coffee were out much quicker than I'd expect! Reading few reviews seem little harsh or unjust? It's walking steps from beach, in a brand new building which lease I'm sure won't be cheap, it's beautifully appointed and pumping out better food than most around and in my experience, quicker than your average wait time anywhere else. I'd happily head back !
